Over-stamping maker’s marks…This is an intriguing little pair of mismatched china pieces. They both have the impressed swan mark for Charles Ford who operated in the Staffs Potteries in Hanley between 1874 and 1904 and used this mark between 1900 and the sale of the works.

A moustache cup, Sailor Jonie and Bloom-in James Joyce

I picked this moustache cup up at a Car Boot Sale and the seller told me that it had come from his Granddad’s effects. The dedication on the cup reads: ‘Wm. Stephens Born 1881 Age 35 Sailor Jonie’. This would mean that the William Stephens in question received the cup in 1916. How many times does a collector say if only an item could speak and tell us its history?
